The new office building was constructed on the site of the original Johnston Memorial Hospital, the demolition of which was phased during the design process to allow recycling of the majority of the materials, thereby reducing cost and dramatically reducing environmental impact. The existing power plant and parking deck was utilized and integrated into the new construction layout and design. A multi-story residence was also relocated for preservation purposes as part of the owner’s continuing effort to be a good neighbor within the community. The four-story structure was constructed of conventional structural steel, brick and stone exterior with glass curtain wall and storefront. The construction design and materials selection achieved a balance of delivering fast track construction with quality components to afford the owner decades of service. Design features include a massive curved glass entrance and clearstory elements, full height lobby atrium, interior water feature, monumental stairs, conference center, full-service restaurant and a state-of-the-art Tier 3 data center that serves the entire network of Food City supermarkets and distribution warehouses.
