This project was Design-Build construction of a new 15,625 square foot medium security dormitory for Virginia Department of Corrections. This facility was created to replace modular units being utilized on campus due to influx of inmates. Steel cell modular construction of interior components was utilized to create the housing area and support/offices. This was then enclosed within a pre-engineered metal building skin. This was a new concept in construction and required training to familiarize all parties. Access controls, detention hardware, & IP based security system were implemented. Safety and security included background checks of all construction workers. This building was constructed adjacent to an occupied facility requiring restricted interaction with inmate work crews. Daily check in with prison staff and reporting a head count of all crews was required. To overcome project challenges extensive meetings of all trades providing front end input to the design were conducted. Close coordination was carried out between the owner’s representative and the construction team to proactively schedule work to ensure that minimal interruption was encountered. Bi-weekly progress meetings were held to achieve this.
